A lightsaber is a fictional energy sword featured prominently in the Star Wars franchise. Typically, a lightsaber is depicted as a glowing plasma blade of magnetically contained energy about 3 feet in length emitted from a metal hilt around 10.5 inches long.[1] The signature weapon of the Jedi Order and their Sith counterparts, both can wield lightsabers for intense melee combat or to deflect blaster bolts with ease. Its unique appearance was created using rotoscoping for the original films and digital effects for the prequel and sequel trilogies. First appearing in the 1977 film A New Hope, a lightsaber has since become an iconic part of every Star Wars movie, with at least one intense lightsaber duel occurring in each main film installment. In 2008, a survey of over 2,000 film fans found it to be the most popular weapon in film history.[2][3] As depicted in the films, a lightsaber's energy blade can effortlessly cut through most substances with little resistance, leaving cauterized wounds in flesh but also capable of being deflected by another lightsaber blade or energy shields. The blade has even been used as a tool to weld metal, and other times it causes bleeding wounds in the flesh accompanied by burns. Some exotic saber-proof materials have been introduced in the Expanded Universe. An active lightsaber emits a distinctive hum that rises in pitch and volume as the blade is rapidly moved through the air, while bringing the blade into contact with another lightsaber's blade produces a loud crackle.
