Custom-fit Cabinet Child Lock - Simple and Beautiful
thingiverse
A cabinet lock designed specifically for cabinets with opposing doors that open away from each other is a game-changer for childproofing. This solution works seamlessly only when both cabinets have knobs featuring cylindrical posts or spindles. Referencing the provided pictures will make the process crystal clear. Note that this solution won't be suitable for every cabinet in the kitchen or bathroom, but rather specifically tailored to those settings where two doors open opposite each other. To create a custom-fit lock, you'll need to determine the diameter of the two spindles on the knobs and the distance between centers as installed on the cabinets. Measure these dimensions with the doors closed. The demo STL file is intended for illustration purposes only; you should use your own measurements to customize the design. Leaving the rest of the parameters in the customizer at default settings will get you started. The primary reason for developing this childproofing solution was the availability of unsightly and cumbersome store-bought options. Any feedback on its effectiveness would be greatly appreciated, along with photos of successful installations. A search for alternative products considered before creating this design is also provided. For optimal results, printing in PLA is recommended as it allows for easy adjustment of tightness by briefly submerging the elbow in hot water and gently bending it to desired tension. While other materials can be used, this method provides a convenient means of fine-tuning the lock's performance. The OpenSCAD file parameters also enable customization of the lock's tightness and ease of use.
