Custom Filament Spool (For drill winding homemade filament!)
thingiverse
The Filastruder purchase led me to seek a filament holder. I found variable size holders that required manual winding, but wanted a drill-operated one as I lacked empty spools. My solution? Designing this holder, which easily fits 1kg of filament (pictured with 1092g). The center spool measures 70mm in diameter, 50mm across, and 32mm in the middle, same as rep-rapper spools. To make it, print the Center Spool.stl (1 at 10% infill, 2 extra shells), Core-washer (1 at 25% infill, 2 extra shells), and Spool Retainer (2 at 25% infill, 2 extra shells). Note that the Core-washer can be reused for multiple spools. Additionally, you'll need a 5/16" x 4" carriage bolt, washer, and nut; six 5/8" screws with countersunk heads; and two cardboard circles (9" in diameter) that are about 1/8" thick and stiff. Cut out the center of each circle using the core printed piece as a template, center the Spool Retainers on the cardboard, punch three small holes in each retainer, then attach them to the Center Spool with screws. Punch a hole next to one retainer for filament anchoring, insert the core into the spool's center, add washers and the nut onto the carriage bolt, place it through the core, and secure it without overtightening. Wind filament using reverse drill motion while maintaining even tension and avoiding excessive force at the edges to prevent cardboard bowing.
