CUSH - Custom Spool Holder

This is a customizable, simplified OpenSCAD based clone of TUSH - The Ultimate Spool Holder (Thingiverse). So first of all thanks to filamentry (Thingiverse) for his innovative design.

This spool holder shares all the features of TUSH that are important to me, it is simple to print and can be assembled without the needs of any tools or parts (like screws) except for the 608 bearings. It looks less fancy (curvy) than TUSH but it can easily be customized to fit any control box (or similar).

Background

I used TUSH and like it very much, but I needed some kind of brackets that I could safely put on top of my Tevo Tornado control box, and I wanted a more stable solution, since TUSH can quite easily fall over. Since I wanted to check out OpenSCAD for some time I simply started to create a less fancy looking spool holder that shares the core features of TUSH.

STL Files: Tevo Tornado

CUSH - Tevo Tornado Control Box v1.1.stl: Default Tevo Tornado version, no screw holes, 152mm wide (as suggested by godoloju at Thingiverse).

Customizer settings unchanged (original scad file)

CUSH - Tevo Tornado Control Box v1.3.stl: Same as v1.1 but with 4mm concentric holes to optionally connect all 4 parts with skewers for additional stability.

screw_hole_diameter = 4

CUSH - Tevo Tornado Control Box v1.3 Broad.stl: Same as regular v1.3 but broader (can be combined with the regular version).

additional_thickness = 7

screw_hole_diameter = 4

CUSH - Tevo Tornado Control Box - Small Spool v1.1.stl: Tevo Tornado version, no screw holes, 152mm wide, for smaller spools (lower bearing distance).

bearing_distance_offset = -33

CUSH - Tevo Tornado Control Box - Small Spool v1.3.stl: Same as v1.1 but with 4mm concentric holes to optionally connect all 4 parts with skewers for additional stability.

bearing_distance_offset = -33

screw_hole_diameter = 4

CUSH - Tevo Tornado Control Box - Small Spool v1.3 Broad.stl: Same as regular v1.3 but broader (can be combined with the regular version).

bearing_distance_offset = -33

additional_thickness = 7

screw_hole_diameter = 4

Note: I don't recommend combining two Broad parts due to the fact that a full spool will most certainly collide with the the spool holder. A version with a notch in the middle section would be required to avoid collision. Until such a version is available I suggest always combining either two regular parts or a regular and a broad part, but never two broad parts (unless the inner part is somehow customized to prevent collision).

STL Files: Others

CUSH - No Brackets.stl: A version without control box clamps, same form factor as TUSH (narrow version)

inner_bracket_width = 125

clamp_pin_length = 0

CUSH - No Brackets v1.3.stl: Same as above but with 4mm screw holes

inner_bracket_width = 125

clamp_pin_length = 0

screw_hole_diameter = 4

CUSH - No Brackets v1.3 Broad.stl: Wider, more stable, version with 4mm screw holes.

inner_bracket_width = 125

clamp_pin_length = 0

Note that it's possible to combine all v1.3 parts with each other (e.g. regular and broad version) as long as they are of the same type (e.g. Tonado regular, Tornado small spool, or no brackets version).

Configuration

If you own the Tevo Tornado, or another printer with a control box that is exactly 15cm wide, you can download my Tevo Tornado STL file. As stated above, starting from v1.1 the width was increased to 152mm, for some additional play (add some tape/felt on the inside if needed).

If you own a control box with different dimensions or if you have other requirements, check out the Customizer app.

Required Parts

4x 608 ball bearings (for scooters, d=22mm, bore=8mm, t=7mm)

Print

As with TUSH, simply print the STL 4 times, add 4x 608 bearings and combine the parts. I printed the parts with PETG (PLA will do just fine, but I like the neon green filament) using 0,2mm layer height, 3 top/bottom layers, 2-3 shells and 20% infill. The bearings should sit tight and hold everything together, but if you want you can put some superglue on the lower part, just in case.

Updates

v1.1: Slightly increased clamp width (152 vs. 150mm, new Customizer default) for a looser fit (if too loose, add some tape/felt, or similar, to the inside of the clamps).

v1.2: Removed Customizer min/max range code comments (no more sliders but decimals are now supported)

v1.3:

Added a new option
additional_thickness
(default 0) for a broader build (stability), set to 7mm in the v1.3 SLTs.

Set the already existing
screw_whole_diameter
to 4mm (SLT's only, Customizer default still 0) allowing the use of skewers (or similar) to connect all 4 parts (stability) ... I changed my mind and want to try this again.

Print Settings

Filament: PETG (here DAS FILAMENT - Transluzent Neongrün)

Infill: 20

Top/Bottom layers: 2

Shells: 2-3 (3 will be more sturdy, but in case of my PETG 2 is more than sturdy enough and it provides some nice transparency, ever so slightly exposing the honeycomb infill).

Notes

This is my original design: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2774131

I just copied it from my Thingiverse account since I'm no longer really active over there.
