In the US, EMT is thin wall electrical conduit. I use 1/2" EMT to make curtain rods. It is strong, cheap, and readily available. It can be cut easily with a hacksaw. EMT comes in 10' lengths. If you need long curtain rods it is probably better to go with ¾" EMT if it will fit in your curtain pocket.

The brackets screw to the wall. The ball end uses ¼"-20 threaded rod epoxied into the hole.

The clamp sleeves slip over the threaded rod, and a nut is captured in the bottom of the inner insert.

Designed in Blender.
