The Curta is a palm-sized mechanical calculator invented by Curt Herzstark, inspired by Gottfried Leibniz's Stepped Reckoner and Charles Thomas' Arithmometer. It uses cogs to accumulate values which are added or complemented via a stepped drum mechanism. Despite the advent of electronic calculators in the 1970s, Curtas were renowned as the best portable calculators at that time.
