I write my students' first names on the board every day at the reception desk, using erasable felt pens in capital letters or magnetic script letters. I've tried magnetic papers, but they're too fragile and require too many repetitions for our Montessori letter set. To create my own magnetic cursive letters, I decided to take action. My students learn better by linking each letter with spaces between them, which helps them associate the written form with its sound. They also memorize the order of the letters and connect it to their names, capital letters, and scripts they already know. As we use these tiles before moving on to cursive writing, my students identify the individual form of each letter more easily. I print them in different colors to make it fun and also in Montessori colors for added engagement (red for vowels and blue for consonants). Note that there are no capital letters in first names, so keep an eye out for that exception! You can also attach a magnet from an old fridge to the back of each tile. These tiles include all 26 letters of the alphabet plus special accents like é, è, and ë. For other letters with accents, you can simply draw them on the tile using Posca markers. Some tiles have special features - for example, vowels, L, and R when they follow V, W, or B have their own unique designs. There are also two different s tiles: one with a hook to attach another letter behind it and one without a hook for words that end in s. Each tile is 1mm thick and has letters that are 3mm thick. The height of each tile is 5cm, while the width varies depending on the letter. The letters are roughly proportional to their actual size (for example, f is about five times the height of a). Finally, all I have left to do is print out all the first names in my class - good luck with that!
