Near Del Rio, Texas, a west-facing shelter stands precariously 60 meters (200 ft.) high above the Devils River valley. One majestic panther, measuring 1.2 meters tall (~4 ft.) and 2 meters long (~7 ft.), sits proudly next to an anthropomorphic shaman in this striking model. The panthers' mountain lion characteristics are quintessential of the Pecos River rock art style, yet Red Linear, Red Monochrome, and geometric designs also featured here convey a deeper meaning about predominantly spiritual sites like these. This shelter site proves unsuitable for habitation due to its shallow setback above a substantial cliff and challenging access. However, one can envision it as an eye-catching billboard above the river valley when the art was freshly created and vibrant. The breathtaking valley vista from this site also suggests a location of profound awe.
