This relief is part of the Curiazi Burial that tells a legendary story. A tragic opera called "The Horatii and the Curiatii" was composed by Italian musician Saverio Mercadante. The opera has three acts and takes the form of a tragedia lirica. Librettist Salvadore Cammarano wrote the storyline, which is based on an ancient Roman legend about warriors known as the Horatii. They were triplets who lived during the reign of King Tullus Hostilius. According to historian Livy, their epic battle with the Curiatii and the brutal murder of their sister by Publius, the sole survivor of the fight, are well-documented events in history books.
