Cupid Triumphant, 1814, Bertel Thorvaldsen, plaster, height 144 cm. Thorvaldsens Museum (Copenhagen, Denmark). Made with ReMake and ReCap from AutoDesk. The figure most commonly featured in Thorvaldsen's art is the god of love, Cupid, due to his powerful status in classical mythology - not because he is physically strong, but because he represents the power that both humans and gods submit to. Cupid Triumphant showcases Cupid's superior strength compared to the gods. "Triumphant" simply means victorious - victorious over other gods: Hercules is one of the first to surrender by hanging his lion skin on a tree stump behind Cupid. Apollo has handed over his lyre to Cupid, which stands behind the tree stump; Jupiter has placed his thunderbolt at Cupid's feet, and Mars has surrendered his helmet.
