Cupid and Psyche is a tale born from the ancient pages of Metamorphoses (also known as The Golden Ass), penned by Lucius Apuleius Madaurensis in the 2nd century AD. This epic story revolves around the triumph of love over obstacles, as Psyche (/ˈsaɪkiː/, Greek: Ψυχή, meaning Soul or Breath of Life) and Cupid (Latin Cupido, Desire) or Amor (Love, Greek Eros ’Ερως) unite in a sacred marriage. Although only Apuleius's narrative has survived the test of time, depictions of Eros and Psyche appear in ancient Greek art as early as the 4th century BC. The story's Neoplatonic undertones and allusions to mystery religions open up multiple avenues for interpretation, making it an allegory, a folktale, a Märchen or fairy tale, and even a myth. Since the Renaissance rediscovered Apuleius's novel, Cupid and Psyche has received widespread recognition in the classical tradition. The story has been retold through poetry, drama, opera, painting, sculpture, and even wallpaper. Direct translation of Psyche's Roman name is Anima.
