Cupid and Psyche

Cupid and Psyche

myminifactory

In this poignant rendition of forsaken love, Rodin captures the instant that the god Cupid relinquishes his mortal companion Psyche at the behest of the envious goddess Venus. Stretching out across a raw block of marble, Psyche frantically clings to the god as he bends towards her and rises with powerful wings beating against the air. The protruding marble strut supporting Cupid's arm anchors him to the block and freezes the star-crossed lovers in an unending parting grasp. In 1893, Cupid and Psyche and Orpheus and Eurydice were Rodin's first carved masterpieces to find a home in an American collection.
