Cupid and Psyche

One of the myths of ancient Rome, as told by Apuleius, revolves around Psyche becoming the wife of the god of love, Cupid, yet she only laid eyes on her beloved in secret darkness and never beheld his radiant face. Her wicked sisters manipulated Psyche into believing that her husband was a grotesque monster. One fateful night, Psyche cautiously lit a lamp to sneak a glimpse at her spouse and end his life with a dagger, but as she gazed upon Cupid reclining on their nuptial couch, she was consumed by overwhelming love. This composition is a quintessential embodiment of the Baroque style.
