Cupid and Hygieia, Relief in Marble, after Original Model from 1837, Thorvaldsen Museum, Copenhagen, Denmark. Created with Memento Beta from Autodesk. Hygieia is the goddess of health, and here she is allowing a snake, the symbol of medicine, to drink from a bowl held by Cupid. The message is that love brings health. In Greek as well as Roman mythology, Hygieia was the daughter of Asclepius, the god of medicine, and Epione. She was the goddess/personification of health, cleanliness, and hygiene. Cupid, also known as Latin Cupido, meaning "desire," is the god of desire, erotic love, attraction, and affection. He is often portrayed as the son of Venus, the love goddess, and Mars, the war god. His Greek counterpart is Eros.
