Cuphea /koo-FEE-uh/ is a genus encompassing approximately 260 varieties of annual and perennial flowering plants native to warm temperate to tropical regions in the Americas. The species span from low-growing herbaceous plants to semi-woody shrubs up to 2 meters (6 feet 7 inches) tall. Often referred to as cupheas, or, in some cases, as cigar plants, these species exhibit a wide range of characteristics. The generic name originates from the Greek word kyphos, meaning bent, curved, or "humped".
