A container for coffee and espresso-based drinks is called a coffee cup. Typically made of glazed ceramic, coffee cups feature one handle for portability while hot beverages are consumed. The ceramic construction provides insulation to the beverage and allows it to be quickly washed with cold water without fear of breakage, unlike glassware. Coffee cups can also be disposable containers used to contain hot beverages such as coffee. Disposable cups may be made from paper or styrofoam and are commonly given to customers on-the-go at coffee shops, often accompanied by a cup sleeve to protect against heat transfer. Other materials previously used to make coffee cups include clay, wood, strengthened glass, metal, ceramic, and porcelain. Usually produced using plastic, the first patent for a coffee cup lid design was submitted in 1967. This initial design featured a tight seal between the cup and lid to minimize leakage, but no drinking hole. The consumer had to tear open the lid. In 1986, the Solo Traveler lid was introduced, showcasing improvements over earlier designs like the Viora, which included larger vent holes for better airflow while drinking. Co-owner of the world's largest collection of coffee cup lids, Louise Harpman notes that coffee cup lids represent a major shift in America's on-the-go culture. NASA engineers created specially-designed cups called Space Cups for use by astronauts at the International Space Station. The 3D printed, unique-shaped cups replace previous liquid-drinking methods which involved sucking fluids out of a bag. Using Space Cups can help NASA develop better fluid systems such as toilets and oxygen circulation. Researchers will also analyze data to create improvements in fluid systems used in various earthly applications, like portable medical equipment for detecting infectious diseases.
