Cuman Stone Figure of a Woman
myminifactory
This is a captivating stone figure of a woman from Russia, specifically from the region once inhabited by the Cumans, a Turkic nomadic people who made up the western branch of the Cuman-Kipchak confederation until the devastating Mongol invasion of 1237 forced them to seek refuge in Hungary and subsequently in Bulgaria. Notably, there were already Cumans present in Bulgaria prior to this event. Their ancestral ties with the Pechenegs allowed them to occupy a vast territory north of the Black Sea known as Cumania, situated along the Volga River. Ultimately, they migrated westward beyond the Black Sea, exerting significant influence on the politics of Kievan Rus', Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Moldavia, Georgia, and Wallachia, which is now part of Romania. The Cumans and Kipchak tribes formed a powerful alliance known as the Cuman-Kipchak confederation. Historically, the Cuman language has been documented in medieval texts and is recognized as one of the earliest Turkic languages spoken by these people. The Codex Cumanicus was an essential guide created to facilitate communication between Catholic missionaries and the Cumans.
