Fragments of a long-lost relief lie shattered in antiquity, unearthed from within a well situated at the entrance of the revered Ashur Temple. The partially preserved relief depicts a bearded deity standing confidently in frontal view alongside two majestic water goddesses. With his hands clasped firmly around two lengthy branches, he watches intently as two agile goats stand upright on their hind legs, feasting on the lush foliage. The central figure is believed to embody Ashur, the powerful city and state god who safeguards the delicate balance of the plant and animal worlds. Yet, it is equally plausible that this enigmatic figure represents the Ebih mountains, with the sacred city of Ashur nestled at their majestic base.
