CubeSat - Think Inside the Box!

CubeSat - Think Inside the Box!

grabcad

This design proposes a 1U CubeSat frame that collapses or extends for easy in-place 3D printing using an SLS printer. By printing the structure in its collapsed state, the frame takes up only 25% of the space required by conventional frames, solving slow z-axis printing issues. The design also features slide-in side plates for customizable cubes based on mission requirements. Side plates are held by the top plate, and their position is defined by locking geometry on the sides. Top and bottom plates are flat for easy customization and located by eight M2 screws that also secure the structure. Interlocking foldable members increase structural locking, while curved internal rails reduce weight and allow functional passages at corners. Solar panels can be placed outside the cube without violating geometric constraints. The frame is made of aluminum but can be produced with other SLS-printable metals.
