Cube 3D Printer bulk filament spool adapter
thingiverse
Cube 3D printer is user-friendly, but it lacks customizable features. Its simplicity makes it ideal for those who want to print objects without constant supervision. However, ABS filament has warping issues even with a heated bed. The major drawback is the expensive filament price at $49/0.7lbs compared to cheaper alternatives like Octave 1.75mm filament at $31/2.2lbs. Fortunately, it's possible to bypass the Dallas Semiconductor 1-wire chip in each cartridge that stores filament color and remaining amount. This allows you to use generic filament with the printer. An adapter can be used for this purpose, which was printed on the Cube itself (version 1). As of March 22nd, 2016, I've upgraded to a Lulzbot TAZ5 that supports a wider range of materials like rubber, wood, and copper. Large ABS parts can be printed without warping issues, and bed leveling is much easier compared to the Cube. Comparative tests are ongoing to evaluate build quality using Cube filament versus less expensive spool filaments. A homemade spool holder has been created for convenience, utilizing 1/2 cpvc tubing and various fittings. A hole has also been drilled to accommodate hanging cartridge filament. The CAD models will be updated when possible.
