Lovecraft in his iconic short story The Call of Cthulhu, which was first published in the pulp magazine Weird Tales back in 1928. This enormous being has been asleep for millennia, hidden deep within the city of R'lyeh beneath the waves of the Pacific Ocean. Humans and aquatic creatures alike worship Cthulhu as a god, revering him through ancient sculptures that depict his vaguely humanoid form, topped by a cuttlefish head, surrounded by tentacles reminiscent of an octopus, and wings eerily similar to those of a dragon. The writer August Derleth coined the term "myth of Cthulhu" to describe the collection of literary pastiches inspired by Lovecraft's fictional universe. This term has stuck, fueling numerous references to Cthulhu in popular culture through literature, role-playing games, and video games.
