I got fed up with having smooth, undetailed walls for items, so I decided to try out the displacement modifier with Blender. It requires some heavy surface subdivision and a bit of UV mapping. To achieve this on your own, you'll need an UV mapped model, a displacement map (you can simply use any image for that), and you'll have to add a subdivision and a displacement modifier to the object in blender. The results speak for themselves, but those 100MB STL files take a while to slice, and even longer to print. About 30 hours of printing time at 0.08mm layer height is what I'm talking about here. Edit: This object prints in three separate parts: the decorative lid, the functional lid, and the rest. I used common 6mm airsoft balls as bearings to get it working smoothly.
