Two engineering students worked together on a project for an Engineering and Design fair, which they took to the regional and state levels. Their abstract is below: "The researchers utilized 3D Slicer computer software to create and print 3D models from one researcher's CT scan. Two building procedures were employed to create 3D models. Building procedure 1, the seed planting method, was more time-consuming and less accurate. Building procedure 2, the shifting display preset method produced better results. The model created using this second method was used as the example in the survey. The responses of the survey supported the purpose of the project – to determine if respondents think 3D models of medical scans would improve their understanding of their anatomy. Medical professionals had a higher average understanding of the physician's explanation due to their medical backgrounds, meaning that they were more likely to understand a medical image compared to a typical patient. This result was expected, and therefore reinforced the fact that the audience that would benefit from having the 3D models, people without medical backgrounds, are more interested in the model; however, because medical professionals still maintained a high average, they also recognized the potential benefit the models could bring. Therefore, 3D modeling of medical images would benefit all of society by improving the doctor-patient relationship and overall patient healthcare." They used the program 3D Slicer to prepare the CT scan for printing. They utilized Microsoft Model Repair and Meshmixer in post-processing.
