Cryptex
thingiverse
My wife wanted to organize an escape room fundraiser & my daughter stumbled upon plans for creating a cryptex. I was too laid back to use PVC, screws, hole saws, and wood, so I designed one for the 3D printer. My printer was producing parts slightly "large" so I added extra clearance than it truly needed so that I wouldn't have to sand it as much. I also designed it to not require support material. It's pretty straightforward. Just keep adding as many rings, locks, and inserts as you want letters, and you should be good to go. Don't let the three lobes mislead you into thinking there are multiple solutions. They're unevenly spaced and only fit together one way. I used a glue stick to attach the letters, but this made the paper stretch a bit, so I created smaller strips of letters to compensate.
