I needed to determine if the building site's elevation was high enough to be flood-free. So, I rapidly created and printed this gauge to clamp onto my spirit level, which I have on hand. Although it is larger than necessary, further development will not occur with this project. The next step would involve a tripod adapter. While not precise, it was sufficient to confirm the site's elevation above flood level - the house being targeted stands just above that level, and the test location is marginally higher still. Several readings were taken with repeated sightings, including some with the level flipped upside down; every result yielded similar outcomes within about a half meter.
