Crown of a public funerary monument

myminifactory

Majestic crown of a public funerary monument, carved from gleaming Pentelic marble and unearthed west of Athens, within the area of the Demosion Sema. The inscription on the epistyle proudly declares that the monument was erected in honor of courageous Athenian riders who fell bravely in the fierce battles of Corinth and Koroneia. A poignant list of the deceased includes the name of Dexileos, a young warrior whose memory is also commemorated by a private relief stele discovered in the ancient cemetery of the Kerameikos.
