I've included some shots of the 3D modeling process in ZBrush, along with a little video showing how I added feather details. My design inspiration came from La Fontaine's fable "The Crow and the Fox," but both crows and ravens appear in folklore and mythology across cultures - in Celtic mythology, the warrior goddess known as the Morrigan often appears as the bird or is seen accompanied by a group of them. Typically, these birds appear in groups of three, signaling that the Morrigan is watching – or possibly getting ready to pay someone a visit. In some Welsh myth cycle tales, the Mabinogion, the raven serves as a harbinger of death. Witches and sorcerers were believed to have the ability to transform themselves into ravens and fly away, thus evading capture. Crows sometimes appear in divination methods. For the ancient Greeks, the crow was a symbol of Apollo in his role as god of prophecy. Augury – using birds for divination – was popular among both the Greeks and Romans, with augurs interpreting messages based on the color and direction of flight. A crow flying in from the east or south is considered favorable. Native Americans often saw the raven as a trickster, similar to Coyote. There are several tales about Raven's mischief, who is sometimes seen as a symbol of transformation. In various tribe legends, Raven is associated with everything from world creation to the gift of sunlight to humanity. Some tribes knew the raven as a soul stealer.
