Crouching Venus with Hand of Cupid

The Crouching Aphrodite has been replicated numerous times in Roman art, showcasing notable diversity from its Greek original. This particular variation was a favorite of the artist Paul Cézanne, who sketched it at the Louvre and reinterpreted it in one of his "Grand Bathers". Several sculptors and historians have linked themselves to this sculpture over time, but the evidence supporting these claims is weak. A small handprint on Aphrodite's back suggests that it belonged to Eros, often depicted with her. For more information: R. Lullies, The Crouching Aphrodite, 1954 - M.
