Crouching Aphrodite at The Louvre, Lens

The Crouching Venus is a Hellenistic masterpiece depicting Venus caught off guard during her bath. With her right knee firmly grounded, she turns her head sharply to the right and extends her right arm over to her left shoulder to cover her modesty. This variant of Venus appears to have been in high demand, given the numerous excavated copies found on Roman sites throughout Italy and France. Influential examples of the Crouching Venus can be seen in prominent collections, inspiring modern sculptors since Giambologna and artists such as Martin Heemskerck, who created a drawing of the Farnese Crouching Venus now housed in Naples.
