The crosshead assembly is a vital component in long stroke reciprocating engines and compressors as it prevents lateral pressure on the piston. This mechanism allows the connecting rod to move independently outside the cylinder, preventing contact between the rod and cylinder walls that could obstruct engine rotation. In these engines with small bore-to-stroke ratios, a direct attachment of the piston to the connecting rod like in trunk engines would cause such collisions.
