This circular cross-head was a prominent part of a self-standing cross. It boasts an ornate style typical of crosses from the 1200s. At the end of each arm, fleur-de-lis motifs are found, which translates to lily in French. These emblems were frequently linked to the Virgin Mary and purity within religious settings. This cross-head was discovered at Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders. For more information on visiting Melrose Abbey, please check our website. Size: 436 x 335 x 110mm. MEL/O/15 | Rae Project
