Cross Column Base, Montemor-O-Novo
sketchfab
Provenance and description: Situated originally before the S. Francisco Convento in Montemor-o-Novo, this marble cross base consists of three interlocking components. It is a quintessential Manuelino sculptural work surrounded by ropes and intricately carved knots that resemble a bundle or package of goods. The base itself, where it supported the cross, bears an inscription that identifies the donor: “ESTA CRVZ MANDOU POR RVI GO[ME]S PAEZ POR SVA DEVOÇAM”. Dating from the early 16th century, this piece was once located near the S. Francisco Monastery and is now safeguarded by the Museum of S. Domingos in Montemor-o-Novo.
