NOTICE #1: USING THIS MASK IS SUBJECT TO SPECIFICATIONS AND CRISIS DEFINITIONS AS PRESENTED BY THE CDC PUBLICATION: "Strategies for Optimizing the Supply of N95 Respirators: Crisis/Alternate Strategies". The relevant paragraph from this CDC document is reproduced in full under the FOOTNOTES section of this information. LINK: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/respirators-strategy/crisis-alternate-strategies.html NOTE #2: Be sure to consult the CHANGELOG at the end of this article. Due to the rapid progression of COVID-19, I uploaded these files as soon as they printed successfully in both SLA and FDM. There are tweaks and improvements I am working on, so there will be many updates. There are several printable masks available on this site. However, many of them do not leverage our current crisis because they fail to meet the following criteria: (a) They are not suitable for using user-installed ("DIY") filtration media. (b) They cannot be printed in smaller 3D printers, as they exceed the bounding box of the print volume (e.g. the purple folding mask on this site). (c) They are not optimized for faster printing. (d) They are not optimized for support-free or near-support free printing (less post processing and smoother finish). (e) They are not set up for easy merging of varying mask bodies to a standardized filtration unit (cartridge). Print the following: (i) Mask body (ii) One of the print cartridges (see file descriptions for differences) (iii) 2 copies of the nut (for fastening the media cartridge. Print gasket if desired Choose your filtration media. Anna Davies, University of Cambridge, has an excellent article covering DIY filtration media in the journal "Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness". That article is uploaded to this posting as a PDF. Also, a graphic derived from her data can be found in the uploaded files. FOOTNOTES: CDC RECOMMENDATION FOR N95 CRISIS SHORTAGE (a) The CDC has published a recommendation for Crisis mask utilization entitled "Strategies for Optimizing the Supply of N95 Respirators: Crisis/Alternate Strategies". This mask is intended to be used according to this CDC document; only when all other options are exhausted. I.E., this mask is suitable only under the conditions of the LAST paragraph of the CDC recommendations, which reads as follows: (b) HCP use of non-NIOSH approved masks or homemade masks In settings where N95 respirators are so limited that routinely practiced standards of care for wearing N95 respirators and equivalent or higher level of protection respirators are no longer possible, and surgical masks are not available, as a last resort, it may be necessary for HCP to use masks that have never been evaluated or approved by NIOSH or homemade masks. It may be considered to use these masks for care of patients with COVID-19, tuberculosis, measles, and varicella. However, caution should be exercised when considering this option. (c) The entire recommendation can be found at this link: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/respirators-strategy/crisis-alternate-strategies.html CHANGELOG: (1) 3/21/20 2:50 PM: First Uploads and Publishing (2) 3/30/20 11:00 AM: Uploaded significantly modified mask system (3) 4/09/20 11:27 AM: Updated further modifications, including splash shield, etc. VII GLOSSARY OF ACRONYMS: FDM: Fusion Deposition Modeling. Basically extrusion printing. Virtually all hobby and K1-K8 school printers are of this type. Hopefully, you can recruit your idle school district to print masks for our health care professionals? HCP: Health Care Professional NIOSH: National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health SLA: Stereolithography, which is photo cured resin layering. Is more expensive (both equipment and resin), but WAY better resolution.
