Crib of Estremoz | Merry christmas

The Estremoz dolls that we recognize today would have originated sometime in the 18th century, likely stemming from a long-standing tradition practiced throughout Portugal that centered around crafting small religious figures. Unlike what one might assume, these dolls were not created by skilled potters but rather by women working in their homes. This fact was confirmed through an act of reverence recorded in the Estremoz Chamber's archives, dated 1770. The intricate designs and decorative flair exhibited by the Estremoz dolls are truly remarkable. These pieces are handmade from three fundamental components: a ball, a plate, and a roll, which are then carefully baked and painted with vibrant colors. A beautifully crafted crib showcasing these dolls is currently on display at the GAMN, having been part of Margarida Ribeiro's esteemed collection in the past.
