Creugas

Originally, this statue is one of two, portraying Creugas and Damoxenos, two ancient boxers, sculpted by Antonio Canova. Canova's masterpieces depict the two legendary fighters locked in combat, with neither emerging victorious; the myth stated that after delivering a final blow to each other, Damoxenos fatally struck Creugas, ending his life. Instead of targeting Creugante's head as he had pretended, Damoxenos landed a devastating kick to Creugas' bowels, sealing his fate. In response, the judges banished Damoxenos and erected this statue in the Temple of Jupiter in Arcadia as a tribute to Creugas' memory.
