Creality CR-10 base plate fan mod
thingiverse
I was frustrated with the fans on my printer, so I decided to replace them. The design of the fans in the control box wasn't good enough for me, and I wanted to use a larger PC fan instead. So, I removed all the fans from the control box. Next, I took off the base plate at the bottom of the power supply, allowing the new fan to blow directly into it and other areas simultaneously. After that, I used tape to cover half of the slots on the side of the control box (check out the pictures). My idea is for the fan to push air into the control box. Some of that air flows up to the top, while some goes down through the power supply as the fan is positioned. Then, the air moves to the back of the control box where it's released. I tested my design using smoke and it worked well. The main advantage is that you only need one 120mm fan. I initially used an Enermax Magma, but I ended up using a BeQuiet PurePower I had lying around instead. The BeQuiet is a great choice because its air pressure is high enough and it's quiet at the same time. My first print (white) was just to test if everything fit together. This one I printed with 10% infill, which wasn't enough - I had to use tape to fix it. To print, I recommend using Cura with cubic subdivision as the infill method and support only touching the build plate. It took around 550g of PLA while printing at 80% infill. The result is unbreakable! You can download my gcode so you can directly print it out on a CR-10. Just make sure to adjust the temperature while printing to match your filament. To connect the new fan, you can use the screws from the original base plate - no need to buy anything else except for the fan itself. To attach the new fan, you can use a Wago 221-412 connector or solder it on, but the best option is the Noctua OmniJoin Kit (noctua.at/de/omnijoin_adaptor_set) which came with another fan I bought for my CR-10 (Noctua NF A4x10 FLX). Let me know what you think! Thanks, Hans
