Covid19 Face Shield

Covid19 Face Shield

#Overview This is the COVID-19 face shield design that has been approved by the US National Institute of Health (NIH). Check out their site at https://3dprint.nih.gov/discover/3dpx-013359. The design features a protective hood that comes back above the face, which sets it apart from other shields. However, its 191mm width is too big for my small printer, which has a 150mm^3 build area. To make it more accessible to others with small printers, I've split the design in half so they can still print these shields! Here are my instructions for printing and assembly: #Parts 1. Both sides of the shield 3D printed using attached STL files. 2. A hot glue gun is recommended; you can also try a SuperGlue, but I think the hot glue gun provides more flexibility. 3. Clear acetate sheets (available at https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RFCM6X4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). 4. A hole puncher is a nice-to-have tool. 5. Rubber bands for the headband (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08378GFVS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). 6. The 'fuzzy' part of a long strip of velcro for the headband (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006RSP1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1). #Assembly 1. Connect both pieces together by first using masking tape on one side, then applying hot glue to fill the 1mm gap and 3mm on either side. 2. After the glue dries, remove the tape so the seam looks nice. 3. Attach fuzzy velcro to the headband; I found it easiest to attach the oversized velcro first, then trim it with a razor blade. 4. Tie two rubber bands together using a 'Girth Hitch' technique (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wZCGjHKP1s). 5. Punch three holes in an acetate sheet about 1" from one side; the holes should be about 111mm apart. 6. Attach the acetate sheet to the shield, then trim it with scissors to a length of about 280mm and width of 210mm. 7. Find a local hospital or medical worker who could use your mask; some places have plenty, while others need them desperately. 8. Try asking around on neighborhood websites like Nextdoor.com for anyone who might need a shield in their line of work. Good luck!
