COVID-19, a severe respiratory illness caused by a previously unknown coronavirus, was first identified in China late in 2019. The initial spread of the coronavirus was linked to an animal market, indicating that humans were contracting the virus from animals. By January 2020, with COVID-19 spreading rapidly to over 100 locations worldwide, including the United States, the World Health Organization officially declared the outbreak a public health emergency and later, a pandemic. Within months, confirmed cases of COVID-19 had been reported in nearly every country on earth. This model illustrates how the virus invades the lungs, causing the respiratory rate and heart rate to increase as the body struggles to compensate for the severe lung disease that is occurring.
