With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the entire globe, millions of people are locked down and medical staff are struggling to care for patients affected by Corona, making personal protection extremely high demand. I printed and tested several of the many Face Shields available but none of them met my standards. One major issue I had was that the actual shield is often just clipped on in a way that allows it to partially pop loose at the worst possible moment. So I designed a face shield with a secure mounting system using three quarter turn tabs that are easy to mount and just as easy to remove. The tabs also allow users to replace a shield when it's damaged or scratched, making it easier to keep the shield in good condition. With the long end of the tabs turned downwards, it will help keep the shield straight and secure. The frame itself is closed on top, which is preferred over an open design where droplets can still fall down behind the shield. For shields, I used transparent A4-sized front covers with a thickness of 300 microns for more stiffness and strength. The holes needed in the shield can be made with a simple paper hole puncher. If you want to print multiple face shields, I recommend using a stiff paper mold with the holes in the correct place. The fastest way to attach the shield to the frame is by attaching the tabs to the shield first and then attaching them to the frame all at once. Next, use scissors to round off the lower end of the face shield. To put on the face shield, attach two cheap rubber bands to the legs and it will stay in place easily. A single rubber band will do just fine, but adding a second one gives you extra security in case one of them snaps.
