This shape with its rounded contours derives its form from ceramics. It was a popular shape in the Eastern Zhou period, featuring two bands of decoration consisting of confronting mythical animals enhanced by the addition of azurite. The Zhou dynasty followed the Shang dynasty and preceded the Qin dynasty. Although it lasted longer than any other Chinese dynasty, the actual political and military control of China by the Ji surnamed clan ended in 771 BC, a period known as the Western Zhou. It began with a patchwork of more than seventy states. This era produced what many consider the zenith of Chinese bronze-ware making. The dynasty also spans the period when the written script evolved into its modern form using an archaic clerical script that emerged during the late Warring States period.
