I'm a sysadmin in the healthcare sector, working with a client who's paralyzed 70% and has Parkinson. This client is passionate about computers and writing, but struggles to use a standard keyboard due to uncontrollable hand movements. To address this challenge, I designed a custom keyboard cover that guides and secures the user's fingers over the correct keys. The Logitech K120 keyboard serves as the base model for this innovative solution. The design comprises four interchangeable parts, allowing it to be printed on any hobby-sized 3D printer with a 180 x 180 bed. A brim of 15mm is recommended for optimal printing results. Once printed, the individual components need to be assembled using glue. It's worth noting that the distinct color coding on the cover serves a functional purpose rather than aesthetic appeal. White keys correspond to basic keyboard functions, yellow keys represent function keys (Dell, Insert, Home, etc.), and black keys are allocated for numerical input. This color-coded system offers significant benefits for individuals with vision impairments. After four months of iterative design and testing, the current version (V7) has been refined to meet the client's specific needs. Key parameters such as size, hole width, distance, and height have been meticulously measured and validated through collaboration with the patient. The Logitech K120 keyboard is widely available at an affordable price point, making it accessible for individuals seeking to leverage this solution. Our client has already experienced remarkable improvements in their writing abilities, and I'm hopeful that this design will extend its benefits to other Parkinson patients worldwide.
