The majestic lion stood proudly as the foundation for a column, its sturdy base carefully carved into one cohesive unit. The lion's weathering is most pronounced around the regal head, clearly indicating that it was designed to stand guard outside a door or window. Given its relatively compact size, this lion bears a striking resemblance to other examples situated beside windows in the apses of Bitonto and Troia cathedrals, as well as on the grand façade of Termoli Cathedral.
