Cotopaxi stands out as a significantly active stratovolcano nestled within the Andes Mountains, roughly 50 kilometers south of Quito, Ecuador, in South America. At a remarkable elevation of 5,897 meters or 19,347 feet above sea level, it takes second place in the country for summit height. Although some claim Cotopaxi is Earth's highest active volcano, others assert that distinction belongs to Llullaillaco, an exceptionally high mountain which experienced its last eruption in 1877.
