Costovertebral joints

Each rib is formed by two synovial joints that make up its costovertebral articulation. The costal tubercle of each rib joins directly with the costal facet on its accompanying vertebra. Most ribs' heads articulate with both their corresponding vertebra and the one immediately above it. Ribs 1, 11, and 12 usually only connect with their own vertebrae.
