Cortinarius is a vast genus of mushrooms that covers over two thousand different species and can be found all around the world. It is believed to be the largest known genus of agarics. A distinctive characteristic shared by every single species within Cortinarius is that young specimens have a veil, known as a cortina, between their cap and stem, which is how they got their name - meaning "curtained". Most of the fibers of the cortina are temporary and will leave no evidence once gone except for slight remnants on the stem in some species. All Cortinarius mushrooms produce a rusty brown spore print. The common names cortinar and webcap refer specifically to members of this genus.
