A switching-mode power supply (SMPS), also known as a switcher, is an efficient electronic power supply that uses a switching regulator to convert electrical energy. It transforms power from a source, such as mains electricity, to a device like a PC, whilst controlling voltage and current characteristics. Unlike linear supplies, the pass transistor in an SMPS switches between low-dissipation full-on and full-off states, minimizing wasted energy. Ideally, it generates no power dissipation; regulation is achieved by adjusting on-to-off time ratios.
