Charles Rudy drew inspiration from a 1927 April issue of National Geographic Magazine for his sculpture. He carefully removed an image of the hen from the magazine. Most of Rudy's work focused on animals living on his farm in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where he also had his studio.
