I use these ceramic mugs for lunch at work because they are far more appealing than heating my food up in plastic containers. However, I've managed to chip a couple of them over time by banging the mugs against various surfaces in a careless manner. One completely shattered when I carelessly clanked it into a granite counter, which made me realize how vulnerable they were to impact. Recently, I accidentally dropped this mug from about 2 feet up onto a concrete floor and was amazed that it bounced without sustaining any damage! While some good fortune was certainly involved, there's no way it would have survived the fall without this protective covering.
