The ultimate objective behind designing this innovative connector was to craft a versatile rack that would elegantly accommodate my expanding library of 3D printing filament. Most of the time, filament spools are conveniently stored by their center, neatly suspended from horizontal rods; however, if you need easy access to the middle spoolâ¦! That's where this clever four-point connector comes in – designed for using ½â aluminum tubing to construct a rack of virtually any length. This impressive connector boasts a removable, contoured cap that gives a sleek look to a single-level setup, while also allowing you to add vertical tubes when the cap is removed, creating additional levels as shown in the illustration. Each of these remarkable connectors stands 4½â tall (including the cap), measures 1¼â wide at its widest point, and boasts a hollow center, ensuring optimal material usage. The tubing sockets are ingeniously equipped with a stop ridge inside, extending ½â deep, to guarantee consistent tube sizing every time. To further validate its usability, the examples were masterfully created in light grey PLA using an UpMini and were confirmed to be 100% printable, mirroring their actual appearance exactly. To date, I have only successfully built the compact rack depicted in the pictures, leveraging ½â aluminum tubing for its construction. For this specific configuration, the depth rails measure 5.75â long, while the horizontal rails span a generous 10.25â long; remarkably, it has a capacity to hold three spools. Though I haven't attempted this yet, with carefully adjusted spacing, this ingenious connector design could also serve as an impressive CD/DVD rack or a creative display case for anything that inspires your imagination.
