I've always been impressed with the original design, but it demanded a significant amount of support structures in order to print flawlessly (at least on my printer). This revised version fills those gaps perfectly. It will consume more filament, but the resulting part will be incredibly robust and the printing process will be significantly easier. If you're able to achieve a clean print without supports, this modification may not be necessary for you. However, if you do require support structures, it's better to invest in additional strength rather than waste resources on unnecessary support material.
